September 2001 A light at the end of the tunnel?

Saturday 8th September

Well after the excitement of Cadwell and all the buggering around with the airlines, I wasn't actually left with a great deal to sort out before Lydden. I'd lent my radiator to Kevin Lucas at Cadwell after he'd punctured his in an incident with Helen Saunders, so that had to go back on. The good news however was that my ever-resourceful brother had got his hands on a 4.1 diff! So, up on the ramps went the car and out came the diff. Well, with a bit of difficulty that is, as there's not enough room to get it out without moving the axle back a bit. So, after a bit of head scratching I removed the rear wheels and took out the halfshafts. This revealed that the offside shaft was actually buckled! Probably from the accident at Snetterton. No problem as I had some spare so a replacement was found. Next, I dropped the front links of the trailing arms and disconnected the back end of the panhard rod. This allowed the axle to swing backwards enough to get the crownwheel of the diff clear of the axle housing. It's almost, if not totally impossible to get the diff out without screwing up the sealing gasket so with some inginuity I made up a new one from an air filter box. Just punch a hole in the box as a registration mark, dob a bit of brease on the studs and put the hole over one of them. Lightly press on the card to see where the other holes should be (the studs will leave a grease mark) and punch out the rest of the holes. Place the card back over the studs, aligning all the holes and then cut out the inner and outer radius' with a good sharp craft knife. Job done. Everything reassembled and topped up with oil and the job's done. The rad was refitted and I fixed a minor electrical fault on the rear lights. I've booked the car into Pete Baldwin's for next Thursday so I can try to get rid of the misfire that plagued me at Cadwell so I can hopefully come up trumps at Lydden. We shall see..... ;)

Well, nothing doing really since the excitment of Lydden (see the race diary).
